Visconti Medici Fountain Pen
Since 1988, Visconti has been known for pushing the envelope with their beautiful and artistic pen designs. This push is continued with their newest entry into the world of writing with the Medici line. “Visconti celebrates the brand’s Florentine origins with a tribute to the Medici family, one of the greatest dynasties in Italian history; the noble house stood out for their political, financial and cultural influence on the city of Florence, but most of all for their passionate contribution to the development of Humanism and the Italian Renaissance.” Coles of London graciously sent me a sampling of all three models to try out and review. Sadly, these beauties must get sent back, but they were an absolute delight to review. Thank you to Michael for sending these over to me, I may have had to change my grail pen list a bit after seeing these.Packaging: Since these were a sample, no packaging was included for the review.
Nib: The nibs are available in Extra-Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, and Stub. I received a medium and fine nib in 18k Yellow gold and a medium nib in 18k Rose gold. These were dip tested for the writing sample and they wrote smoothly with a slight springiness or bounce to them. The fine nib was a true fine and I really enjoyed it. The nibs are engraved with “Visconti,” “18k 750,” “Firenze,” and the letter “M” for medium and “F” for fine. Decorative scrollwork accents the nib as well as a crescent moon shaped breather hole which I feel make these nibs really pop. One last awesome design feature is a little Visconti “V” stamped into the slope of the feed.
Filling System: The Medici line of fountain pens are all equipped with the Visconti Power Filler system. It operates similarly to other vacuum fillers; you unscrew the blind cap then pull backward to withdraw the filling rod. Submerge the nib in your favorite choice of ink and depress the rod back into the body. When the rod reached its original position, it will release the created vacuum and pull ink into the body of the pen, filling it. I have become a huge fan of vacuum filling systems over the past few years, and the Power Filler on these pens is buttery smooth and pleasurable to use.Value: MSRP is $875.00 USD
Overall: The Medici is by far the most expensive pen that I have used or reviewed. I can absolutely see the value in the materials and build quality of these pens. They are by no means an entry level pen from Visconti, for that I would recommend the Mirage or Breeze. But if you have the budget or are looking to save up for a grail pen, then these would be a wonderful choice. These were very hard to send back to Coles of London, but now I have a new grail pen to save up for. Now just to convince my wife to let me buy one.
